Bar Server Job Description Template

Bar Server Job Description Template
Short description
A ready to brand job description for the Bar Server position, covering 28 specific responsibilities across nine areas of accountability, together with qualifications, measurable performance indicators, and a three party signature block. Written at section level for the staff member who serves the lounge floor rather than the counter, in plain language suited to the people who will actually read it.
Purpose
A bar with lounge seating runs two service streams. Guests at the counter are served by the bartender. Guests at tables are served by someone else, and in most properties that someone else has never been given a written description of the job. The result is predictable, namely slower table service, drinks delivered without the right glassware or garnish, empty glasses left standing, and bills presented with errors.
This template defines that role properly:
- For recruitment, it sets an accessible bar at six months of experience while explicitly welcoming fresh graduates with the right attitude, which suits a position that is frequently an entry point into hospitality.
- For training, it becomes the syllabus. Tray handling, service sequence, section setup and POS use are all written down, so onboarding does not depend on who happens to be available to train.
- For service quality, it makes the small things explicit, including repeating orders back to the guest, removing empty glasses regularly, and serving with proper glassware and garnish.
- For revenue accuracy, it places bill presentation and payment handling under cashiering procedures directly in the role.
- For governance, it carries a job code, revision number, update date, and three signatures including the employee’s own acknowledgement.
It suits hotels and resorts with a lounge or seated bar area, venues where table service lags behind counter service, properties with high turnover in entry level service positions, and HR departments completing a beverage job description library.
What is inside the document
A clean portrait layout in five parts.
1. Branded header
A two panel header pairing a marked logo placeholder with a dark title block carrying the document type, job title, job code, and job level, identified here as Staff.
2. Position identification table
Eight fields covering job title, job code, department, job level, company, reporting line to the Bar Captain, location across all bars and lounges, and the teams the position works alongside, namely Bartenders, Barbacks and the Kitchen Team.
As with the Waiter and Bartender templates, this document carries Works With rather than Supervises, which is the correct treatment for a position with no direct reports.
3. Job overview
A single paragraph in second person, describing the Bar Server as the friendly face of the bar and lounge, taking orders and delivering drinks and bar snacks to guests at their tables. It names the reporting line to the Bar Captain and the three standards held at once, namely warmth, accuracy and timing, alongside a section kept clean, well set and welcoming.
4. Key responsibilities
Twenty eight responsibilities organised into nine titled groups:
- Section Setup and Service Standards, four points covering setup of the assigned bar or lounge section including tables, menus, coasters, condiments and side station, adherence to the bar service sequence, tray handling and presentation standards, quick clearing and resetting with regular removal of empty glasses, and keeping the section and service areas tidy throughout the shift.
- Guest Service, three points covering the welcome with menu presentation and explanation of daily specials, accurate order taking with repeat back, and prompt service with proper glassware and garnish alongside regular guest checks.
- Teamwork and Communication, four points covering coordination with bartenders, the Bar Captain and the kitchen, attendance at the pre shift briefing with promotions and VIP notes, immediate reporting of complaints, allergies and intoxicated guests to the Bar Captain, and helping new team members learn section setup and service steps.
- Order Taking, Billing and Equipment Care, four points covering correct POS entry with follow up on order timing from both bar and kitchen, accurate bill presentation and payment handling under cashiering procedures, careful handling of glassware, trays and linen, and returning used glassware and equipment to the bar at the end of service.
- Menu and Product Knowledge, three points covering knowledge of the drinks menu across cocktails, mocktails, spirits, wine and beer with clear explanation to guests, knowledge of the bar snack menu including ingredients and allergens with pairing recommendations, and staying current on specials, promotions and unavailable items.
- Responsible Service and Grooming, three points covering responsible alcohol service including age checks and following company policy on intoxicated guests, food safety, hygiene and sanitation standards under HACCP, and personal grooming with clean uniform on every shift.
- Upselling and Events, three points covering recommendation of happy hours, signature cocktails and premium drinks, support for banquet and event beverage service according to the BEO, and suggestive selling to raise the section average check.
- Shift Duties and Handover, three points covering opening and closing duties, handover of open bills and guest notes to the next shift, and sharing guest feedback and service ideas with the Bar Captain.
- Other Duties, a single properly worded catch all point.
Two details are worth noting. Removing empty glasses regularly appears as its own instruction rather than being folded into general cleanliness, which is correct, since a lounge with uncleared glasses reads as neglected faster than almost any other signal. And following up with both the bar and the kitchen on order timing reflects the reality of lounge service, where a drink and a snack ordered together must arrive together.
On responsible service, the wording here is carefully pitched. The Bar Server performs age checks and follows company policy on intoxicated guests rather than personally refusing service, which is the right level of authority for a staff position and sits consistently with the escalation path through the Bar Captain.
5. Qualifications, performance indicators, and approval
- Qualifications and requirements, seven points covering education with hospitality training noted as an advantage, a minimum of six months as bar server, waiter or waitress with fresh graduates welcomed on attitude, basic knowledge of drinks, cocktails, bar service and hygiene standards, personal qualities including the ability to work under pressure, POS capability after basic training, English for guest communication, and availability for nights, weekends and public holidays.
- Key performance indicators, five measurable standards covering guest satisfaction and positive guest comments by name, order accuracy and service timing, upselling results and average check in the assigned section, section cleanliness, setup standard and grooming checks, and attendance, punctuality and breakage levels.
- A scope limitation note, properly worded.
- A three column approval block with name and date fields for the Corporate General Manager, the Human Resource Manager, and the Bar Server as acknowledging assignee, followed by a footer carrying the update date, revision number, and job code.
What you gain
- Lounge table service held to the same standard as counter service.
- Faster onboarding for an entry level position, because the job is documented rather than demonstrated.
- Fewer billing errors and less breakage, since both are written accountabilities.
- A wider recruitment pool, through qualifications that admit good attitude alongside experience.
- Fair appraisal, through indicators confined to the server’s own section.
- Appropriate authority boundaries on alcohol service for a staff level position.
- A complete bar service structure when paired with the Bar Manager, Bar Supervisor, Bar Captain and Bartender templates.
